That Mennonite Joke wins Best Short Documentary Award!!
The past few screenings at the Winnipeg Reel to Real Film Festival (WRTR) were another resounding success! That Mennonite Joke won the award for Best Short Documentary! All awards at WRTR are selected based on audience votes. The film was viewed by packed audiences from ages 1-70 at both showtimes, leaving standing room only. The attendee survey garnered another average rating at 4.5 stars [out of 5], and once again 97% of attendees would recommend the film to their friends. The main difference this time [as compared to the Steinbach premiere] was more non-Mennonites present. The doc also made an appearance at ShÄrt International Comedy Film Festival, followed by a special panel on comedy featuring Jorge Requena and Orlando Braun of Prairie Boy Productions withcomedian/star of That Mennonite Joke, Matt Falk.
"I had so much fun working on this film.” Says Matt, “It turned out really funny, but if you watch for it, you can see how passionate I became about my culture closer to the end. Working on That Mennonite Joke really did change me in ways I did not expect."
Previously announced was the release of the mobile app That Mennonite Joke Book – which is exactly that, a collection of all your favourite Mennonite jokes! Over 300 jokes were sourced through Twitter and Facebook since last summer. Prairie Boy partnered with Electric Monk Media to develop this content into an app, now available on the iTunes App Store: http://app.mennojoke.com/
The filmmakers are taking requests for community screenings [http://booking.mennojoke.com/]; available dates may vary across Canada. In Manitoba, the docu-comedy is now available for viewing on MTS TV VOD [Cable Video on Demand].
That Mennonite Joke is a hilarious, surprising and insightful documentary-comedy hybrid film that explores humour in Mennonite culture through the perspective of clean comedian Matt Falk. As Matt prepares for his first live TV comedy special, he wonders if his Mennonite culture is funny enough to include more in his act. He takes a comedic walkabout through his heritage speaking with Mennonite humorists, authors, and entertainers such as Miriam Toews, Armin Wiebe, Corny Rempel, Leland Klassen and many more to gather material for his routine.
That Mennonite Joke was produced by Prairie Boy Productions for MTS TV Stories From Home, produced with a grant awarded by BravoFACT [Foundation to Assist Canadian Talent] a division of Bell Media Inc. other participants include the Manitoba Film and Video Production Tax Credit, and the Canadian Film or Video Production Tax Credit.
